In 2024, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine launched the first State of the Science led by the Strategic Council and Dr. Marcia McNutt, president of the National Academy of Sciences. Its ambition was to establish an event that brings together public and private research establishments, private industry, and government to discuss American science leadership and global competitiveness.
The National Academies is an established institution, but its identity design is young–launched in 2021–making it crucial to visually establish its leadership on such an important event.
But while the event would be communicated as a National Academies event, it was equally important to have a presence for each of the 3 individual academies associated with the organization–the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the National Academy of Medicine–each of which has its own visual identity.
The solution was to create a dynamic visual for the event that allows the event to speak to the ever changing landscape of the sciences while also bringing together elements from all 4 organizations in a way that honors their individual identities and beautifully complex relationships.
